My dad is…

Several years ago, my sister-in-law stumbled on a unique idea for my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. She purchased a book for my dad, “My Dad is Brilliant,” and one for my mom, “My Mom is Fantastic.” Her husband wrote his memories of mom and dad in the books. Then she mailed the books to my oldest brother with the request for stories.

As the youngest, I waited for the longest to receive the books but I was able to read all the stories in them too. The smiles on my parents’ faces as they read the books the first time was precious. They quickly became one of the most important possession for them. But I didn’t realize how precious they would be for our family.

Recently, when my father passed away, I was able to go to the meeting with the pastor about the funeral. My oldest brother had preceded my father to heaven, but my remaining brothers wrote memories of my father. I was still sinking in all that his death meant to me, so I had nothing written.

my dad is... stories about familyWhen my mother handed her treasure to the pastor, I realized my oldest brother would not be left out. His own stories about his father would be shared at the memorial service. These books will always be precious to my family. Our grandchildren will be able to read stories of their great-grandparents through the unique idea.

Perhaps this idea will nudge another family to begin sharing stories about their parents in these books or similar books. Why not start now?

Proverbs 17:6 Grandchildren are the crowning glory and ultimate delight of old age, and parents are the pride of their children.
