Today, the hands free law finally went into effect. I personally saw the beginnings of compliance Monday night when I went to my mobile phone provider. They were packed. There were many people buying hands free devices for their phones. I had had a Bluetooth but it didn’t work that well for me. So I was buying a wired device.
In an attempt to use my phone while driving this morning, I realized a few things. First, you need to practice using your hands free device before getting in the car to drive! This is very important. That way the thing isn’t falling out of your ear and you aren’t trying to shove it back in place. That takes two hands and is even more dangerous than talking with a phone to your ear.
You should also know if you can do voice commands, something I’m pleased that my phone can do. Did you know I might be able to send text messages without typing? That’s exciting!
Then on the way home this evening, once I got the thing settled in my ear, I was able to relax and talk to my mom. It was interesting to note that when I was at stoplights, I tended to talk with my hands. Never mind that mom couldn’t see my hands or my gesturing, it is just easier to express myself.
So, while driving hands free can sound a little dangerous, what about living hands free? Are we busily distracted by this world and its demands instead of listening to God? Are our hands glued to our lives controlling everything without a thought of God’s loving guidance? Can we trust God enough to let go?
Colossians 1: 21-2 You yourselves are a case study of what he does. At one time you all had your backs turned to God, thinking rebellious thoughts of him, giving him trouble every chance you got. But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly tuned in to the Message, careful not to be distracted or diverted. There is no other Message—just this one. Every creature under heaven gets this same Message. I, Paul, am a messenger of this Message.
