Often times I start humming to myself. What I’ve been humming recently is a Paramore song, “You are the Only Exception”. I wondered why I was humming it so often. I don’t really even listen to Paramore. My daughter pointed it out that she wakes up to it, a temporary house guest uses it to wake up, and they’ve been singing it and playing it a lot over the last week. No wonder I keep hearing it in my head!
The interesting thing about the song is the lyrics. The words show me a picture of someone moving from distrust to faith in love. It takes courage to reach out to others and trust them with your love and friendship. Especially when you have had your trust broken.
I have experienced broken trust. I have known friends who became acquaintances overnight. Churches and pastors have disillusioned me. I have had people in authority who have taken advantage of their position.
When it comes down to it, everyone lets you down. People are human and humans sin. They will hurt you in some way or another. That is why Jesus is the Only Exception. Jesus is the only one who I can trust. I can always trust in him.
Psalm 27:13[What, what would have become of me] had I not believed that I would see the Lord’s goodness in the land of the living! Wait and hope for and expect the Lord; be brave and of good courage and let your heart be stout and enduring. Yes, wait for and hope for and expect the Lord.
Ps 35: 9-10 But let me run loose and free, celebrating God’s great work, Every bone in my body laughing, singing, “God, there’s no one like you. You put the down-and-out on their feet and protect the unprotected from bullies!”
