John 6:16-21In the evening his disciples went down to the sea, got in the boat, and headed back across the water to Capernaum. It had grown quite dark and Jesus had not yet returned. A huge wind blew up, churning the sea. They were maybe three or four miles out when they saw Jesus walking on the sea, quite near the boat. They were scared senseless, but he reassured them, “It’s me. It’s all right. Don’t be afraid.” So they took him on board. In no time they reached land—the exact spot they were headed to.A storm on the sea can be a dangerous situation. Boats have been destroyed or capsized and people died. So when the wind had risen and the sea was churning, they were concerned about getting to land. They weren’t concerned about where they would end up as long as they made it.When they saw Jesus walking on the water they were very afraid. It would be shocking to see for any of us. But Jesus reassured them that it was him and he was alive. So they made room for him in the boat. And when they landed they were where they wanted to be.Lord, my world feels a little lost today. My mind is whirling with the things that need to be done. There are so many details.Help me to focus on the important things today. I need to get the details of my life in order. I need to pay the bills, wash the dishes and my clothes. I need to do chores to clean things. But I also need to do my work for pay and my work for you. Clarify my mind so that I can see the important things. The people who are around me and the concerns that they have. The things I don’t see that you put in front of me. The little moments of joy and love that shimmer on the sidelines. The small moments of peace you provide in the midst of a day. The beauty of the sky you tirelessly paint by the hour. The needed knowledge and wisdom that you provide during the day. The faith and trust you instill in me when my hope is almost gone. The kindness and gentleness of a stranger you send to remind me of your love.So as I head out in my life today, I ask you to calm the waters for me. And even if the waters are not calm, I ask you to calm me down and reassure me. Come with me today and guide me to where I need to be.
