Prayer is communication between man and God. We make our requests known to Him, and He listens and answers us. Books have been written on how to communicate with God. These are my favorite books on prayer.

My favorite books on prayer were influenced by my father-in-law, who prayed hours every day. He described it as a joy and honor to be able to pray to God. Tom listened to God’s voice, prayed the scriptures out loud, and prayed for his family and the world as he felt led.
One of the authors I remember him discussing was E. M. Bounds. He died in the early 20th century (1913) and spent his last years sharing the truths of prayer he had learned. This book includes:
- Essentials of Prayer
- Necessity of Prayer
- Possibilities of Prayer
- Reality of Prayer
- Weapon of Prayer
Stormie Omartian has written several books on prayer. I have the one for wives and women. One of her books focuses mainly on the power of praise in our prayers, personal stories, biblical truths, and practical guiding principles.
Her writing is fresh, powerful, and sincere. She has lived these prayers and reaches out to women everywhere. A devotional book contains selections from her other books to help women journey through life, such as:
- family and marriage
- priorities for life
- dreams waiting to unfold
- God’s will and plan
- gifts of faith
My favorite books on prayer
Smith Wigglesworth died in 1947 after 40 years of preaching God’s word and witnessing miracles. His books are filled with faith stories that never fail to excite me. He lived the last half of his life very differently, and his transformation at the age of 48 amazed his wife. Reading one of his books is like attending a great revival!
This book, Ever Increasing Faith, includes eighteen scripture references on divine healing and a study on spiritual gifts. There are also studies on prophecy and other Presbyterian subjects. Check out this book—download the sample Kindle.
Oswald Chambers’s book If You Will Ask has an updated language version. This edition, available for the modern reader, enables a younger generation to dig into the truths revealed here. He would say, ‘Prayer changes me, then I change things.’
He is best known for his book My Utmost for His Highest, a Christian classic. Oswald died at the age of 47 while serving his country as a chaplain during World War I.
A more modern author, Max Lucado, brings his devotional books to offer daily devotions, with prayer and bible reading. Grace for the Moment Volume II is the second book of devotions after the success of the first one.
His artistic talent enables marvelous word pictures that bring God’s grace into your life. The books are filled with marvelous drawings that inspire you and lift your spirit.
These are just a few of my favorite prayer books. I hope I have exposed you to new authors and ideas and reminded you of old favorites. Comment below and tell me your favorite prayer books!
