When I worked with three year olds we used the phrase “Forever Friend” to refer to Jesus. Sometimes I wonder if we really look at him as a forever friend.
We also sang a song Every move I make, I make in you. It was my favorite song. It has great hand motions, it is fun to sing and it has great words and meaning. Because, every breath I take I breathe in you. The presence of God, the being of God. Every step I take I take in you. Every time I move, I depend on him for every direction.
When I break at noon from work, I have a hard time relaxing. I keep thinking about all the problems I haven’t fixed and what I’m going to do about them. But eventually I scold myself and say, stop thinking about work. What is my prayer about today? Pray for my children? My spouse? My ministry? My extended family? Who needs prayer?
Sometimes I think about my morning devotions and what is it that caught my heart but I didn’t have time to think on at that moment.
This morning I read the introduction to Leviticus. How Leviticus is full of tiny details concerning every part of our lives. I’ve often wondered why such a boring book should be written. It was written because God cares about every part of our lives. Every detail, tiny or not, every moment of our day, God cares about those things. Eugene Peterson said, “A detailed and meticulous preparation for living “holy” in a culture that hasn’t the faintest idea what “holy” is.” This world we live in, our culture, hasn’t the faintest idea what “holy” is. But God does. If we fix our attention on him, daily, with every step and every breath, we will be transformed into holiness. As Romans 12 says, “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it.”
Let’s be like little children as we ponder these words. Okay, every body put your hands in the air and wave to the beat of the na’s.
